This design is based on the iconic picture of the smiling Beni-Amir boy taken in 1965 by National Geography photographer James Blair in the Teseney region of Eritrea. The picture was later published as a poster and adorned the households of thousands of Eritreans back home and abroad. Speculations aside, no one really knows who this boy is but his radiant smile has become unmistakably symbolic: warm, welcoming and subtly defiant.
The mystery surrounding the Beni Amir has given rise to various speculations about his identity. What anyone for sure, however, is that he hails from the Beni Amir, the largest subgroup of the Tigre ethnic group. The name Beni Amir means "Sons of Amir"; named after the ancestor of the clan Amer Ibn Kunu,
